October 28th 2012

I had my crew come in to check the bottom depth of the pit. It seems to be right on the money. The squid boats are out in force.

October 27th 2012

Today was a "red flag" fire danger day so my work was limited. I cleaned out the pit and got things ready for checking the depth of the excavation. The weather was very dry and there was a slight ocean breeze, temps of 75 degrees. I repaired the bad tire on the backhoe, found out that the air was leaking from a porous rim rather than from the tire so I painted the suspect area with a good epoxy paint.

October 22 2012

I started cleaning out the pit . I moved rocks and tried to leave the fines behind. The new ramp is not too steep. Nice and cool in the 60's.

October 21 2012

The new and improved ramp went in today. I used the bulldozer to flatten out the bottom, tough going with lots of rock. Now I have to remove the scrapings and even out the rest of the pit. I'm at 10 ft on the piping as you can see from the joint in the pvc. I'll clean up the pit and then use my theodolite to check bottom which needs to be 1430ft.

October 20th 2012

A very grey and misty day today. Moved  a lot of dirt and it looks like I'm at grade in the back. I'll bring the bulldozer in tomorrow and redo the ramp as it needs to be about 3 feet deeper. You can see the 15 ft grade rod in some of these pictures (the tall skinney thing).

October 15 2012

Limited progress today as I had to perform some maintanence on the backhoe. It looks like I'm going to have to replace the rear tires as the leak from yesterday is still there, the tire looks quite old and I think it 's just worn through and starting to rot. I'm scraping the rocks into piles in the pit so that I leave the "fines" behind. This will let me have a smoother floor as I approach the end of the excavation.

October 13 2012

I was struck by the "curse of the 13th" today...got a flat on the backhoe. It seems that the cold night air deflated the tire sufficiently that when I drove into the pit it broke the bead. I had to use my Unimog to air up the tire.
The digging went well using the backhoe front bucket in the pit. Progress is much more rapid using this method. I think I am nearing the end of the excavation. A few more days and I should be done!

October 12 2012

Good progress today, used the D6 to rip up and flatten the bottom of the pit on one side, this means that I will be able to use the front bucket to move dirt directly from the pit rather than moving it from the outside with the hoe. It was freezing today..only 65 with a nice ocean breeze!

October 8 2012

Yes it was very nice today mid 70's and broken sunshine.

The new ramp is in...only took a couple of hours...Time to do more digging.
